Rules creep, competitiveness, and other scary things

Post by Crusin » Mon Oct 17, 2005 12:38 pm

I believe there are mulitple issues involving, gray area cars. Three that come to mind are:

1. The mods were made to the car before the individual joined COM. They did not research the rules closely, or asked a friend about the subject car and was told, oh,,that is an SSA car, or with your wider wheels you are in ST.

2. Gasp, heaven forbid, the individual wants to desperately win the $$$ trophy and get a kiss from the trophy queen and will do whatever to achieve that end.

3. The rules are full of loophole caused by advanced technology. This leaves them open to interpretation or mis-interpretation. Some of the rules were probably written when the only blower on a VW was the cooling fan on the Beetle engine.

It is up to the competitors to police their class. The steward will enforce rules, but COM does not have a "tear down" engine protest policy. We can only inspect the outside modifications to assure they meet spec. At a recent event, a driver was complaining that competitors car was not legal and the stewards were not doing their job. I asked if he had protested the car and the reply was no. Again, the competitors must police their class.

If a particular car is constantly winning, is it due to some modification, or is it due to an good driver. There are several individuals in the club who can any car faster than the owner. This is due to talent and experience. Others might possibly be winning due to gray area reasons.

I suggested several years ago, that if a person wins the class for the season, they get bumped up one class the next year. If they win that class, they get bumped up again. If they lose, they drop back to their orignal class. My idea was to allow other cars to be competitive an win. This went over like sushi at a Texas bbq.

Some SCCA classes impose weight penalties for consistently faster cars. I am sure the club can easily afford a set of scales. If a car is a consistent winner, he must add XX pounds to the car.

COM is competitive and is becoming more so. The club offers various opportunities for the drivers to win: individual time trial wins, end of season class win, driver of the year, plus the various "annual cups" for the best German, Japanese, British, car. If you want to eliminate the competitiveness, eliminate the opportunity to win an award.

Just my 2 cents, nonsense, and comments
