In-Car Video Camera?

Can anyone recommend a video camera for me? I've been using a normal MiniDV camera mounted behind my head but the field of view is quite small and I get a lot of wind noise. Are there cameras especially suited to track driving?

Ahhh, the quest for video. <Puts on his audiophile and videophile hat> Wind noise is a killer, anything less than a Chasecam http://www.chasecam.com/ setup or the like and you'll have more wind noise than you hope for. Only wind noise workaround in my tintop was to put the Samsung Sportscam near the front windshield in a wind 'null' as with the windows down...

A cheap alternative is the afformentioned Samsung Sportscam though this super cheap cam at http://www.goprocamera.com/index3.htm just came along and have yet to hear the results. Seems interesting.

My Samsung camera has a remote microphone jack. Picked up a remote mic and ext.cord @ Radio Shack for about $12. Plugging in remote mic turns off camera mic. Ran cord/mic to back of car, placed mic. next to exhaust pipes. Great sound, no wind noise.

Check a precious post I ran on this. There are several good recommentations, from a inexpensive camera and clamp to state of the art if your pockets are anywhere from shallow to deep.

I stick a mic on the rear license bracket, it works okay up to about 110mph.

Listen to it, much better than having the mic inside the car.

I use a Canon XR 400 and it does not get any windnoise at all. There is a setting on it to filter out wind noise. It actually works extremely well for a pretty simple video camera.

tmak26b, it does sound good! I used to have a 350z; it has a very distinctive sound - I miss it a bit!

Yeah, the engine sounds like crap, but the exhaust do sound very good.

Definately need to go remote mic to get any decent sound. For what's it worth the best quality video I've seen is Steve's at Limerock, shot with a Canon ZR200 set to widescreen.

I ended up buying a JVC mg155 hard drive camcorder but its quality was terrible, so I returned it. I guess its only 1 megapixel. I think I'll shop for one of those newfangled High Definition widescreen ones.

One great thing about the ZR series is its ability to do video input for <$250. I have a ZR100 that I use with a Sony lipstick camera.
