Sealing tape used on Miata bulkhead

Post by MiataSteve » Thu Jan 11, 2007 10:53 pm

What is the sealing tape everybody is using to seal off the back of the car (fuel tank) from the drivers compartment? Where can I get it?

Thanks, Steve

The aluminum HVAC stuff you can get from Home Depot. Comes in rolls with a backing. Cut to size, peel off backing, stick on.

I think it is called "dead soft aluminum tape". Also known as aluminum foil tape, aluminum tape, etc.

If you are going to pass SCCA inspection, the tape used to cover the holes should meet their rule of thumb, which I think is the 3x rule. If you are covering a 1" diameter hole, the patch (tape) should be 3" in diameter.

For the package shelf, tech may use a flashlight to look for visable light poking into the trunk. Finally, if this is for an SCCA tech, you have to seal up the holes in the firewall, again, following the 3x rule.

Thanks Will. Just trying to add that extra measure of safety.

Steve,

Will is completely wrong. For safety, you need to use lead, not aluminum. Trust me on this. The heavier the better.

Mike, you forgot the instructions about chewing on the lead to soften it up before application. Makes it easier to form to the opening.
