Need BMW tech advice
My wife's 97 BMW 318TI automatic radiator wore out. When I relaced it I unhooked the tranny cooler lines and lost some fluid. After hooking everything back up I couldn't find anywhere to check or add fluid. The owner's manual shows nothing. I can't find anywhere on the transmission to add fluid (like a manual does). Can anyone here help? Gary
FWIW, on my BMWs there are two very big allen-headed plugs on the side of the transmission casing - one right below the other. They will likely be very tight and you don't have a lot of room to use an allen-head socket and ratchet. I bought a big allen key and cut about 1/2" off the end so I could fit it into the fill/drain plug and get a 3/8" socket & ratchet on it. I've also used a bolt w/ nuts that fit the allen plug to do the same thing.
If the plugs won't loosen try driving the car around to warm up the casing. If that doesn't work, try a torch. If that doesn't work, give up. Be sure you can loosen the fill(upper) plug before even thinking about draining the fluid. If you are only adding fluid you only need remove the upper fill plug.
The easiest way to refill is to snake some thin tubing down from the engine compartment and insert it into the fill hole and use a funnel to replenish the fluid from above. The tranny is full when fluid begins to spill out. A pump-type dispenser also works but can be messy.
Good luck.
