"Ugh. The current process is flawed. Period. Improve it and we can spend less time defending its integrity. "
Before you say the current process is flawed spend some time learning it, working within the system and everything involved, then make suggestions to improve.
"Simple example already discussed...an obvious typo such as the 1:20 v. 1:29 would never make it through if the prelim result were published. For that matter, I have yet to hear what is involved in the existing procedure of checks and balances."
There is a checks and balance. At least when I was involved, Timing and Scoring had a redundant system to prevent timing errors. I find it hard to believe that this error went unnoticed. There is as I recall both electronic and hand written timing results that are cross checked. Given what I know about the timing system and how it works I tend to agree with Will that it was an error on how it was read vs anything else. I was not there and have not spoken to anyone so I could be wrong
"Pretty lengthy reading, much to take in...particularly for noobies. "
I can not believe this statement. Noobies especially should be reading the rules and be clear on what is allowed and what is not. When I was Chief of Event Operations I always toyed with suggesting that people would have to pass a test and work an event before driving. Ignorance is not an excuse. In my opinion if you do not know the rules do not play the game.
Gotta ask...

Scott, I just use a Sharpie to put a little line on my screen to remember where I left off.offcamber09 wrote:BTW if the post is very long-winded, maybe you guys could use chapters to break it up. That way I know where to start when I get back from the bathroom.

That was/is my goal. I'm just getting a little tired of defending my intent.therooster wrote:Before you say the current process is flawed spend some time learning it, working within the system and everything involved, then make suggestions to improve.

If uncertain, why comment?
Again, point missed. I'm done on this topic.therooster wrote:I can not believe this statement. Noobies especially should be reading the rules and be clear on what is allowed and what is not. As far as quotes.... when you reply to a post highlight some text of the original post and hit the "quote" button. You'll see the highlighted text in the reply box precedded by "[quote=("user name of the poster") followed by a closed bracket. This indicates the beginning of the quoted text. The end of the quoted text is followed by "/quote" within brackets. Just use the preceding and ending indicators where ever you'd like to quote some text. Sorry, not exactly clear but hope it helps.

Coochie, thanks for the clarification.RyanC wrote:Will,
just a clarification, but the wrong time from the last NHIS event was NOT misread, nor were the trophies correctly awarded. The printout had a typo whereupon the 9 and 0 were transposed. As badly as our names get mangled (just call me Coochie!), this was not an error made by the guys reading off the results. It wasn't until after the event that the mistake was noticed/corrected.
Either we are talking about two different incidents, or I did not hear the whole back story. Sorry for any confusion.
Jeff,
No need to apologize. We're just having discussions here. I do not mean to offend or put anyone off with my posts, and I read everyone else's posts with the same objective in mind. Forum posts sometimes leave too much room for the reader's interpretations, and I know that sometimes the intent behind my posts (as well as a chuckle here and there) aren't interpreted that way.
All of the insight I have into the world of COMSCC T&S has been from listening to Dan during monthly meetings. Since Dan is not a frequent poster here, I offered up the info I had to share. I suggest you come to the meeting, inquire about it, and be prepared to share your thoughts on why instantaneous availability of results would benefit the membership. If you cannot make it to the meeting, I will raise the question on your behalf (hey, its my job!).
My initial reaction to your request is that "live results" will create more work and require more help. While I cannot speak for anyone else, I would think it is safe to say that I am not alone in this thought. With this in mind, my friendly advice is to learn more about the process (which I appreciate you are trying to do) and determine if you can offer a stream-lined solution.
Unfortunately, we do not have an over abundance of volunteer staff. It is not uncommon for several of our volunteer staff to get very restricted track time, even though they are paying to attend the events. While the volunteers aren't complaining, I know this bothers the Prez, and I agree with him 100%.
Just a quick word about the many people that help to keep COM together: From what I've seen, the volunteers aren't looking for praise, though an occasional "thank you" is always warmly accepted. I assume most are like myself. We are just trying to give back to the club that has given us so much. Paying it forward, if you will. Plenty of us enjoy our involvement with the club, and it's not like we don't have any fun. In many ways, we are just a large group of friends with common interests.
I hope that I have not offended anyone by drifting the conversation back toward volunteer help!
Here's looking forward to a constructive meeting tonight!
Cheers,
Will

Raj,
Mark, have you ever written comedy for British TV? Finally, you post more than a one-word response, but it turns out to be a cut & paste from the COM website. The master strikes again!
