Re: Synchros?
Bruce, I agree on the race trannys. I wish i had a Hewland in all my track cars. Since the Porsche is not my car I use the clutch...most of the time
scca racing
I know Scott, but I'm not yet ready to go to that level. Every time I go to the races, I talk myself into it a little more. But then when I consider the costs....

Guy I usually crew for figures 10-12K a year to support his ITB Golf including entry fees, tow vehicle costs etc. He pays for most of the wrenching, granted, but we're still talking a sizable increase from current $ I spend.

That doesn't count the 15K to build in the first place, and any major damage that might happen - this weekend the carnage in group 7 was pretty heavy, he's got fresh dents on 3 out of four sides of the car. So for now, I think I'll stay here in double AA ball...

Call/email me if you need the tranny, I might be back in Ipswich later this week.
You might be surprised at how comparable the cost of racing SCCA can be to COM. As you pointed out, there is more potential for collision damage to the car, but other than that most of the cost is in getting the car to be eligible in the first place. And most of what it takes to make the car eligible is safety equipment, which you should be adding as you get more aggressive anyway.

For example, the entry fee for the October 3-hour enduro at WGI is $300. That includes an hour of practice and three hours of racing, for a cost of $75/hour of track time. The Cheap Date was probably $260 for a double, which would be 50 minutes each day, so $156/hour. COM costs $150 for 1.3 hours of track time, but you can get held up a lot more because you can't always pass when you want.

Of course, all this goes out the window if you're in a class where you need a new set of Hoosiers per race, or in a class where the action gets tight and aggressive. But if you got into a vintage class with your '65 or put something together for ITE and didn't much care about points, you can have a lot of fun for similar money to COM.
Pic of the new MX-5
Here's yours truly flogging the new Miata. What a blast. I thought it was well balanced and easy to drive. Would have loved to try it out with some stickier tires.
When does the miata steroid testing start ? Look at those fender flares. Oh, Mike, if you hit a speed bump driving like that they'll be calling you stumpy.
I agree, I thought the new miata felt great, very balanced with a little too much understeer that would probably be cured with some azeni's.
That was a smokin' time Haydn -- nice job. By the way, I heard from a co-worker who was there on Sunday that some cowboy lost it at the end of the course and crashed into the gate, wrecking the timing gear.

Fun, but lines were long.
I only managed 12th or 13th fastest time of the day on Sunday. Lines were so long I only made one run.
