Street Legal Requirements

Post by dtlemoine » Thu Mar 06, 2014 5:48 pm

Folks - question about street legality in this state... Would a pre-2000 car pass inspection with an aftermarket steering wheel (airbags removed)?

Would something with a supersprint muffler pass if it retained an OEM cat?

Thanks,
Dave

my 98 M3 has an aftermarket wheel (no airbag, and it's obvious), along with an aftermarket exhaust (cats remain) and has passes inspection for several years that way. I know others with similar experiences.

Keep your old wheel, just in case.

As long as the air bag light is not illuminated it is not a fail in Ma. (Unless the bags are hanging out and you have removed the air bag light... )

As far as I know, as long as the airbag light is off, you should not have an issue. Some stations are more strict than others, I think it really depends on the shop. I remember one station giving me crap for not having the stock steering wheel and also for removing the rear seats
