Palmer Motorsports Park

Post by brucesallen » Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:44 pm

Published in today's electronic version of the SCCA New England Region's magazine, Pit Talk, on page 26: minutes of the September NER Board meeting.

"New Track Committee Report
by Dick Patullo:
The LLC brought a new potential investor
the meeting, NER member, Fred Ferguson
expressed and interest on becoming involved
in developing the Palmer Motorsport Park
Club racing facility. Fred was accompanied
by his lawyer, Jonathan Fryer (also an NER
member) and his financial advisor Bob Cohen.
There was a long and friendly discussion
between the BOD members, LLC members
and the members of Fred’s ‘TEAM’. It was
agreed, in principal, that the LLC would work
with due diligence with Fred’s ‘team’ to work
on details of an agreement. The meeting
would be scheduled so as to be convenient
for those parties to meet at the engineer’s
office in Longmeadow in mid September. It
is expected that a letter of intent would be
presented in 30 days and that an agreement
could be brought to the BOD in no more than
90 days. Doug Fisher called for a 10 minute
recess at 9:37 PM As permitting continues
for the new track site, it is necessary to make
payments as agreed to in the purchase and
sale agreement."

I think you all know who Fred is.

Last night I updated the Board of Directors regarding plans for the track in Palmer MA. We are fully permitted and are commencing site work. We are seeking advisors, partners, and supporters.

We wish to preserve the goal originally envisioned by COMSCC president Rob Goldfarb and NER SCCA of a true road course serving car clubs and the grassroots motorsports community in New England. That vision is still very much alive in Palmer. We think the track is ideally situated and the circuit jaw-dropping for even the most seasoned drivers.

Here is a birds eye view of the ~500-acre site in the town of Palmer, abutting a power line and state forests and surrounded by 1000-foot hills.

Below is a 3D scale model of the 2+ mile track. The track has 189 feet of elevation from turn 2 to entry into the right loop. (In contrast, the greatest elevation at the Glen, from bus stop to the toe, is 110 feet.) It will be run only counter-clockwise initially.

More to come soon - web site, blog, live video feed, etc.

As one who was at the meeting, I'm very excited about the progress Fred and his associates have made, and wish them the best of luck. As anyone that's built anything bigger than a model car knows, it's a long process and there's plenty of opportunity for s&^% to go wrong. But it looks and sounds like a good plan, with reasonable goals and expectations is in place.

Please make sure the trees are cleared back a bunch at that turn on the far right, coming down that hill onto the straight is going to be plenty fast!

First track record, can we get one of those tiny RC cars (1" long) and drive it around the wooden mock up?

Thanks for the encouragement. Regarding model cars, there is one shown to scale but it is only a speck (3/8 inches=15 feet).

Wow that is awesome, where did you get that picture? I wonder if it's clockwise or counterclowise. Nice elevation changes too. Anyone know how many miles the track is?

If I could make a suggestion... With Ft. Devens site up in teh air and at least 5 autocross clubs running there pretty much every day of every weekend, it would be great to have a large patch of asphalt on teh side of teh track for us autocross folks to do our thing.

I can get you in touch with folks running BMWCCA, Renegade Miata, NCR Porsche and NER SCCA Solo II in order to discuss this. Might work well for everyone involved.

Not to disagree with Nile, but the devens site has been "up in the air" since I started autoxing in 1999.
And no parking lot will ever compare to devens for autox events.
