ST Areo Rule Clarification

Post by zip4zat » Wed Jul 12, 2006 5:19 pm

X.4. Aftermarket aerodynamic devices are prohibited with the exception
of front air dams/spoilers and rear spoiler, unless a factory
option. Front air dam must be fixed and positioned no lower than
bottom of wheel. Rear spoiler must offer unobstructed rearward view
while driving.

I interpret this as...

'front air dams/spoilers and rear spoiler' are free. Other areodynamic devices are allowed as long as they were a factory option. Otherwise, all other areodynamic devices are prohibited.

Naturally, this begs the question what is a 'rear spolier'? The spirit would indicate a rear trunk spoiler, but what about a rear roof spoiler? How does this include a hatchback?

Thanks for any comments here, especially from any of the stewards.

In my opinion, there are two key elements here: Rear Spoiler, would indicate it is located at the rear of the car, not in a mid position. Also the verbage about "must offer unobstructed rearward view " would indicate it would be mounted at the rear of the car, not roof mounted. Just my 2 cents.

Thats kinda what I figured about the rear spoiler, but its not totally explicit as its worded.

Im a little more interested in the front air dam/spoiler or whatever you want to call it.

FWIW, the 2006 STi comes with a spoiler at the edge of the roof that looks like this:

I'd imagine something like this would also be legal since it's mounted on the rear of the car and does not obstruct the rearward view :D

The STi would fall under the factory option rule, the VW is at the rear and does not obstruct rear vision.

Think I will install a Fast and Frivilous wing on Tweety. About 24 inches off the rear deck so as to not impede the vision of Subies setting up for a pass.

If the rule for the rear spoiler really means 'trunkish' spoiler/ wing, then we cant use the 06 roof vane spoiler as theres not update/backdate allowance. Im not sure if it falls under the factory option clause, because it wasnt an option for earlier models.

A front air dam though, Im thinking they are allowed.... theres is even a factory option version!

front air dam

Joe, I'm not sure what you are asking here? Is a front airdam/spoiler legal in ST? - yes - it doesn't matter whether it's a factory option or not - any aftermarket is fine. The factory option text to me means a factory body kit (side skirts, etc) which the WRX/STi essentially has.

I'd have to agree that the rear window spoiler or vortex generators would probably not qualify as 'rear' spoiler by COM rules.

I need to read up on the topics of wings... but just a quick inquiry:

Which one or both would be legal in ST?

both are in the rear of the vechile and neither obstructs view..
