Expected life on Hoosiers?

Post by jadams » Tue Feb 07, 2006 12:55 pm

I found a good deal on some Hoosiers (315 35 17 and 275 40 17) for my TA. I was wondering how much life I could expect out of these tires before I buy them. Approx how many event days could I expect to get out of them compared to like a Kuhmo V710? I know it is all depends on what I do to them, but I was just wondering a rough order of magnitude.

Thanks,

I'm assuming you wear tires at a pretty good clip if you're a T/A in SPA. I run a SPA BMW which is a bit lighter and I can get 1 week-end normally, sometimes 2 on the S04 Hoosiers. The S05 is finally out this year in my size and I'm hoping to see improved wear patterns. The S03 used to get 3-4 events, the S04 just didn't wear well. They Hoosiers are definitely faster than other tires, but come with a significant tire budget.

Yikes!

I knew that they wore than Kuhmo's, but I didn't think that they were that bad!! I guess I will have to stay away from them then. If I only got one weekend out of a set of tires....I am sure that my wife would like that one. I will just have to stick with the Kuhmo's then.

Thanks for the info!

Hoosiers vs. 710s

Post by offcamber09 » Tue Feb 07, 2006 6:27 pm

Here's the view from the other end of the racing world (budget-wise). I ran the 710s at every COM event last year and will use them again this year...plenty of meat on them. The Hoosiers are faster...but will flat spot to the cords instantly on brake lock-up. Excluding flat spots- I could come close to getting a season out of the S03. I have not run the newer hoosiers for a full season. I still get "some" grip with Chris Conacher's 2-3 year old hand-me-downs as my back up tires. There's life in them there tires.

Sorry I forgot to add that I found the 710s to fall off rather dramatically after 5-6 laps in a Mustang at 3050# without driver. Great for time trial not for endurance.

Hey Scott,

That Mustang of yours only weighs 3050#?? Gees, I guess I need to put my pig on a diet. I have remove a couple of hundred pounds from my TA and it still weighs 3415# without me in it! I guess I will have to remove the rear axle or something. That is probably worth a couple of hundred pounds. :D

The car is about as gutted as I can get it. I'll trade you 100# for 100 of your extra hp

So where do you all get the sleazy, obnoxious avatars? I figure if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I'm thinking that as long as it's a cartoon it's okay, right?

I knew it wouldn't be long before that got a response. Agreed I thought the cartoon aspect of it made it acceptable. I saw that Raj changed his avatar from Barney doing the nasty. I had that file as a gif for years and it was too big to use on our forum. I finally had a computer geek friend of mine reduce it in size so I could use it.

No Coleen hasn't seen it on this site, but she's seen it. She's a good sport.

Rather than lower myself to sleaze, I opt instead to bring some sorely-needed culture to the group. Please enjoy this picture of one of the most beautiful sculptures of all time.

Christine

BTW I thought Barney was funny.

Scott, have you run on Toyo RA-1 tires? They are grippy to the cord and do not go away, at least on my 2500-lb Miata...

I used them on a VW Rabbitt at one point. I thought they were more like Victoracers while the 710s were aimed at the Hoosiers. It seems the 710s are better suited to the lighter cars, but I can't complain with the wear characteristics of the tire.

Christine kudos for the "equal time". Somehow I now feel less inferior.
