Sam,
Fully agree we have excellent UNTAPPED proven oil reserves right here at home BUT... An agreement was made long ago to price oil in US dollars. As the US dumped the dollar-gold backing with Nixon, it is apparent that now NOTHING backs the US dollar. As you know, the Federal Reserve is neither government Federal and they have ZERO reserves. The Fed is a PRIVATE entity backed by the Elites (Rothschilds, etc), and they hold they keep America in debit slavery.
Anywho, the point being now that our wink-wink nudge-nudge- buddy system is breaking down worldwide due to military action PLUS the now highly devaluated private currency called the FIAT (Federal Reserve Note), we have oil being sold in things other then the dollar. The problem is China and the oil rich countries are swimming in now nearly worthless dollars, yet they want them to be worth something.
So what does any of the above have to do with America's rich oil fields? PLENTY. If we start pumping them, then that removes our wink-wink with the Bush family longtime Saudi friends. Of course we have supplied the Saudis with some mighty impressive military hardware, as America is perhaps the #1 arms dealer in the world.
So yes, it gets deep and complicated, but just follow the (funny) money trail and old-time friends of Bush combined with the self interests of the private bank, which is ILLEGAL and UNCONSTITUTIONAL, called the Federal Reserve.
Apologies if the above seems disorganized and all over the map. BTW, odds are we went to war with Iraq and dethroned their leader because he began selling oil in non-USD currencies. Now we have Vene and Iran doing the same thing. The recently opened Iran oil bourse is doing well and now Russia/Iran/etc are discussing forming their own OPEC_like entity, and selling oil in non-USD currencies. This would show the true lack of value and/or need for anyone to hold much USD is their reserves. The dollar would essentially be dead (a good thing imho).
Long story short, if we drill we piss off the Saudis. Opec prices oil in non-USD, USD fails. As i said above, i hope the USD fails, America needs a proper, consitutional currency. Our tax dollars probably barely pay for the lending interest ewe have to pay the private bank called the Federal Reserve. The US Constitution specifically prohibits such things, as debit IS slavery. American citizens are (per se) slaves to the Saudis, the Chinese, and the Fed.

I recently read that 60% of our diesel production is purchased by the military and the remaining is sold on the market.
As soon as things get back to "normal" I feel the price of diesel will drop once again below the cost of gasoline and the economic benefit will return.
I have owned both gas and diesel trucks and currently I own nothing but diesels.(8 of them)
Their dependability, longevity and pulling power are unmatched by any gas engine I have encountered.
My '06 Ram 2500 Cummins makes 710ft.lbs of torque to the wheels, returns 18-20 towing and 23-26mpg empty (has a Mercedes 6 speed)
...and is quiet as a gas engine.
No lines at the diesel pumps either.
Diesel is the future.

Without posting that long quote:
That is all well and good Steven, but get off the Bush kick. This transcends MANY MANY US presidents. Additionally, a Nation Energy Policy has been shit on by both parties going back to the Roosevelt years. So, I guess we need someone like Ron Paul to kick the desert sands back in their faces?

ever see? http://syrianamovie.warnerbros.com/synopsis.html
...and so that I'm not accused of hijacking the thread, I used to get only about 11mpg towing a 4500lb load (2000lb rented U-Haul) with my old 180hp 4Runner.
This improved to about 13mpg when I got my 800lb aluminum trailer and load lightened to about 3400lbs...but it was still hunting in/out of overdrive on gentle grades struggling to maintain 70mph. It was stable and rock solid, but woefully underpowered.
It'll be interesting to see how much more efficent my new Pathfinder is with almost 100lbs more TQ and HP...despite being 800lbs heavier. Heck, it feels faster 0-60 than my wife's stock MR2 SC!
In stop/go commuting, its about the same 15mpg as the old 4Runner was, but on a recent 400mile hwy trip (70mph), I got 24mpg. Thats way better (its got an extra cog in the tranny and revs 500rpm less, plus a host of other 'modern' developments)
I'm expecting to have to flog it a lot less when towing, so its bound to improve on the abysmal 13mpg of the underpowered (but beloved) old 4Runner

I am in the process of lining up a new, or nearly new hauler. I towed the MS3 to Lime Rock on Grove's open trailer last year with the 2000 Dodge 360ci gasser, and got nearly 17 mpg...........until the HILLS!! Jay towed the Nissan back and I think he got around the same mileage. The old Turbo Diesel managed about the same - - 16 mpg - to Mosport. I will be satisfied with an overall 15 mpg towing 7000#'s of car/hauler.

I drive about 5k-10k miles a year.(don't get out much)Even at 10mpg,that adds up to 500-1000 gallons of fuel.
I heat my auto repair shop with wood I cut off my property, saving 2-3k gallons of heating oil per year.Have done this for 8 years.
Yet,I still get the dirty looks and guzzler comments when I fuel up my trucks from people that drive their 30mpg cars 40k miles a year, actually using more fuel than I do.
Untill there is fuel rationing, the cost will only be a nuisance to most Americans, who will go about life business as usual.

You should see the lines for diesel in China. The stations are shutting off their pumps because their cost is over the fixed price that they can charge.rajito wrote:I have to admit, it's a bit hilarious to hear people complain about gas prices when most of us burn more gas pursuing this hobby than many small towns do, while paying way less for gas than most of the rest of the world does.

I would post a video of the gas lines on youtube, but it's been blocked since the weekend.
