harness rules for street prepared

Post by breakaway500 » Tue Oct 16, 2007 11:12 am

I have been looking over the rules regarding harness requirements and was wondering if my stock Schroth 4 point harness which uses 2" straps would be acceptable with the addition of an anti-submarine 5th strap which the buckle has the ability to acept as an option.ImageThanks.Mark

As I'm sure you're aware, 5-point systems come with 3" shoulder
belts, so when calling for a 5-point system, I'm pretty sure that most
would agree that a 3" shoulder belt is an expected part of that system.
So, I'll be the party pooper and say no. :D

Not sure this helps, but it's my understanding that when using the HANS device 2" shoulder belts are recommended. So, if it's ok there .....?

For Prepared and Street Prepared cars the 3" inch requirement is for the lap belt and it appears from the picture that his shoulder and lap belts are both 2".

The rules allow for shoulder belts of 2" width.

Forgive my ignorance, but would these belts as supplied with the car by Ariel count as the factory production restraint, and therefore be acceptable in the applicable class, not prepared?

Herb, this is among the kinds of things I am referring to in our email discussion.

I am not sue which class I would be required to run in,and after reading the class requirements,I'm still not sure.
The car does not have a conventional windshield,so I was assuming I would be placed in a prepared class.
It seems to fit in the street prepared B class as it is a 4cyl. supercharged motor with all factory running gear and is street legal and registered.I'm just not sure about the windshield issue.Photo:

The SCCA allows 2" lap belts if a six point & FIA Cert - page 74 of the GCR so I assume that we would allow it as well.

Lap Belts
B. A six or seven point system, recommended for use in all automobiles, consists of a three (3) inch seat belt or an FIA approved two (2) inch seat belt (SFI 2-inch seat belts are not currently allowed), approximately a three (3) inch strap over the shoulder type of shoulder harness, and two approximately two (2) inch leg or anti submarine straps. The seven-point system also has an approximately two (2) inch anti-submarine strap.

Should the driver, at anytime not utilize the HANS® device, then 3-inch shoulder harnesses are required. The replacement cycle for the 2-inch harnesses shall be per Section

I can add a dual sub belt to make it a six point fairly easily.Would this satisfy the harness requirements?
It would be nice to get a few years out of the stock harnesses before having to replace them.Image

I agree with Bill and Don. Sounds like a good reason to submit a rule change.

With a 5+ point harness, we should allow 2" lap belts. I would also go along with 2" shoulder harnesses, especially if a HANS is used.

I think we should specify the certification required (SFI, FIA), and let the competitor decide which configuration works best for them. This may cause a nasty reaction from some, but we should also verify certification/dates. i would much rather have a participant in a new 2" harness than a 10 year-old 3" harness!
