Front Splitter Question

Post by smoltz » Wed Feb 07, 2024 12:41 am

Looking a the Exterior tab of the Touring classification spreadsheet...

Row 8 - 1 Point - Non-Factory Trim/modified front bumper/air dam/spoiler
Row 9 - 1 Point - Non-Factory Trim/modified front splitter, in addition to bumper/air dam/spoiler

If I add a splitter (one that doesn't extend more than 3.5 inches from front bumper skin leading edge) but don't change the front bumper in any other way is that 1pt (Row 9) or 2 pts (Row 8 + 9)? The "in addition" language is confusing to me.

My take, as a steward, is 1 point. The "in addition to" language was added to avoid doubt in the case where someone needed to build out the dam in order to fix the splitter to the car. Certain BMW models allow a splitter to be simply bolted right up to the existing bumper, while others required a bit of an air dam to create a consistent mating surface.

Photos of your OE bumper and the aftermarket splitter you're planning to install could help confirm.

Thanks for the clarification and quick reply.

I'm running a Toyota GR86.

This is what the stock front bumper looks like...

I am looking to add this APR piece (it's a single piece that bolts onto bottom of bumper)

And it looks like this mounted....

I know that that picture shows canards which are separately. I also understand that if it exceeds the 3.5" rule that it'll be 2pt, not 1pt. :-)

This is interesting... there does seem to be a vertical dam component to this piece above the portion that protrudes forward. Good on you for seeking clarification, definitely a gray area.

Suggest reaching out to rules@comscc.org for a formal ruling - this will invoke the entire steward team to review.
