A friend has a 2017 base WRX which has an electric assist steering rack. (all 2015-up base WRXs have the electric assist units) Car has 20k miles. The steering rack makes a lot of scary klunking noises, like it's loose, on fast transitions and occasionally has a 1/2 second of "no power assist" feel turning in to one corner (Turn 9 CCW at WH). No codes no warning lights etc. It does not make any noises etc at a street driving pace and there is no play in any of the tie rods etc and rack bushings/bolts are tight. Ive looked online but have not come across any useable info other than some of the 2015-up racks have been making "klunk" noises at slow street speeds. Car is not under warranty.
Looking to see if more knowledgable 2015-up Subaru base WRX owners who track their cars have encountered anything similar? It may just be a bum rack but maybe the electric units can't handle track duty? Thanks for any help!

It's not what you drive, it's how you drive. "Lap times matter"
