FIA/SFI seats

Hi gang,

Building a miata over here and wondering what the seat requirements are for the club. Is current FIA certification required? If not, is a back brace mandated?

Currently searching the internet for a good deal on used seats. I DO have certified harnesses, so good to go there.

We don't have any specific seat requirements, but of course you should use the best, safest one you can afford. A back brace is not really needed in a Miata, there's little space for it to go back.

Do plenty of research, the Miata can be a tight fit. If the car is a dedicated track car, an aluminium seat from kirkey, ultrshield or similar is a good place to start, with as much "halo" head protection as you can make fit and still get in and out. If it's a street driver, I had a pair of these in my Miata and thye worked out well:

I Have an aluminum Kirkey now, 17" , and needed to modify the floor pan a bit to install it.

Thanks for replying. I have been learning of the space limitations in the miata, luckily I am of 'average' height. The car will see occasional street use, and will be driven back and forth to events. I'd love to get a halo seat to protect un-helmeted heads from the roll bar, but I haven't hear of many people using those seats on the street.

Not sure about Miata fit but I've seen these in use and could be a good compromise for vision while still providing head support:

FWIW, Liz's car which is a '95 Miate, And the first Baker car that went upside down which was a '91 Miata, ran Momo "Start" seats. They 1. fit on the sliders, 2. fit in the cockpit, 3. are really comfy, 4. provide darn good driver support at speed, 5.are Italian design - very nice! 6. are FIA approved thus by SCCA reg's do not require a back brace in case you want to run elsewhere.

A little pricey, but all the boxes are checked.
