Classification

Post by BlackBora » Tue Jan 31, 2006 1:35 am

Now i have an 01 vw jetta 1.8t. Now this is def. not stock, i have been street/ drag racing for a year with this car. I have lowering springs, a chip, new exhaust, new rims, cai, and some other little things. I was just wondering where abouts my car would be in for a class so i know what i will be running with.

Thanks
Kevin

Kevin,

As in all things in life, the devil is in the details. The 1.8T Jetta starts out in SSA, then progresses to ST1, SPB, then finally PB. All of the modifications you listed could be legal in ST, which would leave you in ST1. That said, you have to look at each modification to see if it is legal in that class. My guess is that your car would be classified in SPB, which would require safety items such as a rollcage, driver suit, etc.

The COM rulebook is available on the main website at COMSCC.ORG. Read through the rules carefully.

First off, the car is definately modified beyond what is allowed in Stock, so SSA is out. Let's look at each of your mods and how they would fit into ST:

Lowering Springs - Legal in ST
Exhaust - Legal in ST provided that the exhaust exits behind the rear wheels and retains the stock catalytic converters. If either of these requirements are not met, jump to Street Prepared (SPB).
Chip - Legal in ST provided that stock boost levels are retained. In the VW case, I highly doubt this is true. If the chip alters boost, jump to SPB.
New Rims - Legal in ST provided that the wheel/tire combination meets the ST requirement of remaining within the fender. See the rulebook for specifics. Again, if not, jump to SPB.
CAI - legal in ST provided that the OEM airflow meter and unmodified throttlebody are used. If not, you guessed it, jump to SPB.
"Some Other Little Things" - Who knows. The seemingly silliest modifications could put you into SPB or even PB. Aftermarket body kits, wings, aero, etc., are illegal in ST and would move you to SPB. If the fenders are flared, that is an automatic jump to PB.

Your car is in one of those tricky situations. Unfortunately, cars modded for the street or drag racing are usually outclassed in road course racing/driving clubs. Not a problem unless you do not have the required safety equipment in those classes, which may include a rollcage, 5 or 6-point harnesses, etc.

The good news is that you could remove a few of the illegal mods and to be legally classed in ST. My recommendation is to remove any mods that would prohibit the Jetta from being ST legal. It may 'slow' your car down, but in the long run it will 'speed' you up. Concentrate more on the driving and less on the speed part. Learn to drive and add speed as you progress, you'll probably be a much better driver in less time. As they say, if you can't go fast with 90 hp, 900 won't help you.

Above all, be safe, have fun, and welcome to the club!

Cheers,

Will

That all seems correct, except SSA migrates to ST2 instead of ST1.

 Sometimes my brain forgets that the letters in SS do not line up with the numbers in ST. IE SSA does not equal ST1, etc.

Oh well, what did I say about the devil in the details?

You should have your car classified before you arrive at the event. Post a message on this forum with all of the mods to the car or contact one of the Stewards for help. As Will stated, if you are running additional boost, you will be in the SP category. Tech inspection does not class the cars, only check them for safety related issues.

If this is your first track experience, do not worry about going fast. The objective is to be smooth and safe. The speed comes later. In other words, don't be too concerned about the car class at this point. Get your feet wet then decide what mods you want to add or delete from your car. Have fun.

Post by BlackBora » Tue Jan 31, 2006 5:18 pm

Ohk here goes: The car itself is a 01 jetta 1.8t. I have an apr chip which i would run on 93 octain level. this gives me more boost out of the turbo. I have H&R lowering springs, lowered 1.5in. I have a carbon fiber hood, i have a new diverter valve which holds more boost. 18 in rims with z rated toyos, also have the stock 15 in rims. Neuspeed cold air intake, miltek cat back exhaust, 2.5. I beleieve that is up to date. now a review.

1) apr chip on 93 mode
2)Lowered 1.5in
3)Cabon fiber hood
4)hyberboost diverter valve
5)18 in rims
6)Cold Air intake
7)New Catback exhaust

thanks for all the help

Yikes, a carbon fiber hood? According to the meeting in December, that needs a roll bar and a racing suit!

And hood pins, if I recall correctly.

I'm not the expert, but I would say that (1) with boost control, (3), and (4) would put you in SPB. SPB requires roll bar, harnesses, and driving suit.

If you bring the chip to stock boost levels (we'll have to take your word for it, since there's no F1 style tech inspection), put the OEM hood back on, and remove (4), you would be in ST2.

Kevin,

Cool. I have an APR chip with ECMS on my Audi A4. Switch it back to the stock program and run your OEM hood. The reason to stay away from the higher classes (SP and P) has more to do with the additional safety requirements than anything. All cars classed in SP or P require rollbars or rollcages, race harnesses, and driving suits. If your car is classed in SP or P and you do not have the REQUIRED safety equipment for those classes, you will not be allowed to participate. If you keep the car classed in ST, you'll be fine without the rollbar, harnesses, or race suit. You'll only need a M00 or SA00 helmet (or newer), 100% cotton long pants (jeans), long-sleeve shirt, factory seatbelts, etc. All things you probably have already.

Don't forget to stock up on toothpaste. With all the grinning you'll be doing after your first event, you'll want to be looking your best.
