You know, in my car I've got plenty of time for those shenanigans on the uphill.

Proper protocol for advanced Corolla drivers is to bring the grid worker a bouquet of flowers picked alongside the chicane while driving... :D

I had a buddy cut this session up and post it. The HD quality is pretty good with these cheapo Aiptek cameras. It was kind of lucky that I got such a good angle on the rear view mirror. In these vids we learn that some folks are more stingy with the point bys than others. ;)

Troy: great video! Is that a NA Miata you are driving, or does it have some bost? It seems pretty quick!

Wow... Thanks for the compliments. No boost. Just a plain Jane 1.6L. I wouldn't really consider myself quick....but I did have a personal best of a few laps in the 1:25.xxx during practice that Sunday. It only took all year to get there.. :)

Nice images and nice driving, Troy.

I was behind you in that mess, and decided to run through the pits to let it clear out. I ended up nearly alone afterwards - everyone was crammed up in the front.

OK, I was going to keep it to myself, but I want Bruce's critique.



I was a very repeatable 1:31-1:33. Not bad having started out in April at about 2:00 and having to supply sedatives for Nate...

My fastest was 1:29 :D , my worst - a missed shift into the bowl - was 1:41 :oops:

Thanks to all the instructors who dared to ride, and thanks to all the drivers I annoyed over the past season. This has been a fantastic experience, a really steep learning curve, and a really supportive and generally forgiving group. Next season, 1:23...

Hi Jim,

Camera is made by Aiptek, model is Action-HD. Available at Walmart for $150.

Small solid-state camcorder. It shoots to Secure Digital media (SD) as well as the high capacity version (SDHC).

Well made little unit that can take a beating. No moving parts = no moving parts to vibrate to death!

Memory cards are cheap these days, and are so large that virtually all of them are high capacity (over 2 gigabytes).

There is a new model which features an external microphone jack, which might make it a better choice for race/track cars with quieter exhausts.

Video looks and sounds great on a big screen plasma. Note that the online videos, even Vimeo, are compressed a good amoount. Actually, I set quality to "50%" when I re-processed the video with the data dashboard on top of it.

I'm a big fan of the Aiptek camcorders for track use!

Good idea to tape the time trial.Our lines through a few are substantially different,especially 6...hmm..Very interesting....thanks!..:wink:

OK, here it is. Lines look great and appropriate for a Miata. (A high power-to-stick car might need to take a later apex for a more "point and shoot" technique to take advantage of the power.) I could not be sure because of poor sound quality, but your braking and acceleration timing might be a source of shaved lap times. In general you must brake as late as possible with threshold braking right up to the turn-in for most turns ensuring that the turn-in speed is still correct and never any coasting before braking. For most turns, "Slow-in-fast-out". It looked like you might be late on the gas in turn3. Should be on gas before apex. In turn 6 you may be able to carry more speed; brake less. Miata line is circular because they cannot accelerate like higher powered cars that need to go ll the way up to the curb for turn-in. Turn 9 and one are "fast-in-slow-out" trail-braking turns because they are followed by another turn so hold on to your speed as long as possible and brake in the turn (avoiding spin-ou due to light rear-end). In 9 the real apex is the second apex. Get on the gas early coming down the hill to turn 10. You should have so much speed that you have trouble keeping the car on the track on the left side after the apex. Your line into 11 is good. Allows late full braking in a straight line. I like your line in 1 and 2A. Just make sure you are accelerating right after 2A all the way through a late apex in 2B.
