Can someone point me in the direction of the person I should talk to about running my car this year as a novice member of your group?

I don't want show up and be turned away because I did not come prepared properly.

I am not sure about the belt/harness requirements or classification of my car.

If I wear a Hans device,do I have to supply one for my instructor as well?

I need a definitive answer so I may make the appropriate changes, if need be,prior to showing up to drive,and being told to go home.

I have read the rulebook,but am still confused.

So,who should I be talking to?

Hans Device is attached to the helmet . I don't see where you would have to supply your instructor with his personal safety device. If you are in SS or ST you can use the stock factory seat belts.

I am leaning toward SPB as my class.Not sure.It is a street legal car,4cyl,with a supercharger stock,and the rest of the car is stock.I like running without the cycle fenders,but if that puts me in a class that requires extensive safety mods,I can just put them back on.Tires are stock size. The car has no windshield frame like most cars.That's why I'm thinking prepared.I really don't know.

Are You talking an Ariel Atom? I consider the Atom to be a Kit Car or custom built car like my "Lotary 7" since it is imported without engine and is not legally registered in any state except under special rules like Street Rod (in NH), kit or custom car.
I ran my "Lotary 7", Viking TT for years in SPA with no fenders in the front. But lack of windshield will put you in prepared. The Stewards are required to classify any car not classified in the rule book (2008 book not posted yet). Nate Hine, is chief steward.

Let me add that we would love to have you at our events and welcome you to the club. Many of us will help you get through these problems to get you on track. We have a class for any car, street or race only as long as it is safe. And it doesn't use nitrous oxide.

Stephan I'll gladly ride with you, I'll have to affix a roller device to the side of my helmet so it won't scrape on the track -- unless you got your new springs installed, but you'll have to ride with me in my Mustang :D

Hi.My Atom was not imported in kit form.It was built 100% by Brammo Motorsports in Ashland,Oregon as a turn key car.They are the USA builder/distributor of the Atom. The car is street legal (titled) with legal road use plates in place.It has a 4 point OEM schroth harness,but I was thinking of changing them to 5 point units with 3" belts due to current rules.

I am hoping this will suffice for track day inspection as I have not heard back on my inquiries regarding safety requirements.

Going by the book,I think the addition of the new harness and restraints should OK me for spb as the 07 rules requird.. I did converse with a fellow Atom owner who ran last year with comscc and he was classed spb.

AS OF JAN 1, all non OEM harnesses must be SFI or FIA approved, with current certification (ie: not expired).

Harnesses must also be installed as indicated by its manufacturer or sanctioning body (SFI or FIA).

The new harness rule no longer specifies minimum belt widths, etc.

Please plan accordingly!

Do I understand this properly?

OLD rules:
For prepared classes,the harnss requirement for an open car with no windshield has been 5 point with a 3" lap belt.Shoulder straps I believe can be 2" due to a Hans device requiring them for proper function.

With this new rule change,as my car came from Ariel (OEM)with a factory Ariel Atom Schroth 4 point harness,using 2" belts across the lap and shoulders, and some sort of special construction (that does not require a fifth strap for aint-sub)I will be OK to run?

I want to follow the rules,but would like to save the $600 I would spend on "new" harnesses to spend on a fire suit,gloves,arm restraints (two sets) and either a Hans device or the G-Force restraint system.

My Atom is not very weather-proof,so I'll be trailering it to events.

I have never been to Canada but the tracks sound like a lot of fun.

Does Canada require any special permits or such to trailer a motor vehicle in for recreational purposes? A copy of the title etc.?

Assuming your car is either in a SP (Street Prepared) or P (Prepared) class, the belts must be SFI or FIA certified. I'm fairly certain the the new rule states a minimum of 5-points in SP and P. There was a bit of discussion, so I may not be remembering correctly.

If the car is classed in SS (Showroom Stock) or ST (Street Touring), the OEM belts will be fine.

Interestingly enough, the Atom I instructed at Limerock had 5-point Willans harnesses. Could be that the car came with a 4-point Willans and the owner simply had to add the 5th (crotch) strap.

Regardless of the rules, I'm thinking you'll REALLY want the anti-submarine strap (5th (and possibly 6th) strap).

Hopefully, the 2008 rules will be posted soon. I'm sure Herb has it in the works!
