Yes, wheel to wheel racing in an... ahhh... acquired taste. Consider this, at least you spec M guys have fenders.
Well, have to be off right now to attend a pair of SCCA races at NHIS in the open wheel car this weekend. Even after wathcing that video i would not want to do anything else this weekend than race.

Yeah, i think not ONE Miata got away unscathed this weekend. Was chatting with Rob Lav, one of board guys at SCCA, and he agrees they really need to dump the Chicane-Chicane config for racing. For DE days it may be safer but for racing it is not a good way to go. The rain did not help matters either. Open wheels guys, due to no fenders and we value our cars/sanity, are really cool as we front-runners already had a pre-race meeting after qualification about how the start would basically go. Seems the GT1/etc and Miata guys were more like bumper-pool as their fenders and bumpers are (sadly) weapons of choice to possibly gain spots on the track.Tsurara wrote:Spec Miata is insane. Saw a brand spankin' new 350Z got tapped on the driver's side door and... those two Porsches. Think i'll stay with an open wheel car, we seem more... sane. Again, the rain and CC configuration did not help matters as the exit of turn 2 onto the straight was slippery as heck during race group 5 (not sure how it was for your group).
PS: Perhaps SCCA needs to start a Miata Crash Derby league or make some rules of enguagement in the current GCR and strictly enforce them.

Some classes are indeed very large and as i understand it there have been talks about making some changes (at least on the National Finals level) to have qualification and the top XYZ qty being in the race.chaos4NH wrote:Very entertaining video and interesting remarks from Steve. In the dry on Saturday, going into the oval the Porsche/etc class were five wide(!) i heard. You can guess what happens when someone taps someone else in the oval section and he goes sideways up to the outside wall and the runners behind that guy go scrambling with nowhere to really go.
The rain on Sunday added with the CC configuration did make for some, well, interesting situations. The GT1/etc run group were getting quite sideways (nearly ricer drifting) uphill after T3 and that makes for an interesting situation yet everyone got through ok as far as i saw.
Note: my comments are mine alone. SCCA did a very good job at what was an interesting situation with CC in the rain as the track was slippery in sections. A total guess, yet probably 99% of the cars did fine with little if any contact if we take away the Miatas. That group appears to have a unique set of rules of engagement and makes me glad to have chosen an FC over a Miata for SCCA racing.
Am very impressed with everyone at registration/flagging/marshalling/etc in SCCA and the open wheel classification i run with is a truly great group of guys! HUGE thumbs up! We all pull for each other and if one guys needs mechanical help we all lend a hand to help him fix the car or parts as needed/asked/required. Sure we are competitors, yet even after only a small handful of races they have been welcoming to a newbie (me), allowed me to be a member of 'family', and at night we get together and socialize like a family.
So perhaps my view is different than the 'family' of Miata folks at SCCA, though the guys who run/work for Flatout Motorsports have been awesome! Just felt they deserve a shout out too.

Pretty sure the Grand Touring/Touring/Improved Touring/etc guys value their cars just as much as the open wheeled guys. Wish the Miata folks would gang up on fender banging and side bumping folks. Maybe it is just a Miata thing??? As i said, SCCA needs a separate Miata Smash Up Derby.. on SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY... of course
As i said, 99% of non-Miata guys seemed fine (my guess as to percentage).

EnjoyTheMusic, for someone who has posted and commented in person about how they detest stereotypes and how they have been unfairly subjected to such stereotypes in other clubs (due to your "saloon" car), I'm shocked to see you use such a wide brush to singularly paint the personalities of such a diverse group of people.
