Rulebook Section:

Car classification
****************************************

Old Rule:
****************************************
N/A
****************************************

New Rule:
****************************************
I propose the Ariel Atom (any series) with a 4cyl. supercharged or turbocharged engine be assigned to Prepared B class, and can be run with or without the factory fenders.

For information purposes I present the following:

The Ariel Atom is a sports car created and designed to be operated on public roads, and is street legal in many states and countries. It uses a Chevrolet Cobalt SS drivetrain or Honda Civic drivetrain. It will pass all safety and emission standards in most states. It may look like a formula car,and have high performance numbers, however, is not a formula car. It is a very basic sports car with minimal comfort features, all for the sake of less weight.

Classifying any car without fenders as an open wheel car that must run in the Formula class is much too generic a statement. A 1933 Ford coupe without fenders would have to run in Formula under those open wheel guidelines. So would a fenderless Caterham or Locost.

The SCCA classifies Formula cars as such:

"The Formula Category is intended to provide the membership and inter-
ested manufacturers with the opportunity to compete in purpose built,
highly modified open wheel single seat race cars. The Club may alter or adjust
specifications and require, permit, or restrict certain specific components
to equate competitive potential."

Addition to rules. Usage of Methanol fuel.
****************************************

New Rule:
****************************************
Cars running methanol fuel, in any concentration, shall be required to run in the Prepared divisions,(A,B or C) or Formula, which require proper fireproof safety gear be worn; SFI approved fire suit, gloves, shoes.

Due to the nature of Methanol, and its extreme volatility, when being used as a fuel in a race car, an on board fire supression system shall be required.Placarding of vehicles using methanol as a fuel to warn others is also suggested.

Seeing as COM cannot determine the strenght of said Methanol, all usage shall be considered at a 100% concentration, and treated as such.

Cars utilizing Methanol shall be required to inject said fuel downstream of the throttle body (or bodies) to allow containment of said material between the throttle body(s) and combustion chamber in the event of a continual discharg failure.

Unless contained, Methanol being discharged upstream into the air box or intake inlet may be exposed to potential ignition sources and a subsequent uncontrolled flash fire.

#4- This request was approved with a change – delete the words “after the throttle body”
Rulebook Section:

VI. H. (new section)
****************************************

Old Rule:
****************************************
none
****************************************

New Rule:
****************************************
All cars shall be powered by gasoline, diesel fuel, biodiesel fuel or electricity (provided by batteries) alone or in combination. Gasoline may be leaded or unleaded. Gasoline may include race gas limited by the SCCA fuel GCR to prevent toxic chemical use. Pump gasoline including Methyl or Ethyl Alcohol (Methanol or Ethanol) as limited by SCCA GCR may be used. Methyl or Ethyl Alcohol as a primary fuel is prohibited. Small amounts of Methyl or Ethyl Alcohol may be injected into an engine (after the throttle body - deleted) for engine cooling and detonation control when mixed with at least 50% water. No more than one gallon of such a mix shall be carried in the car to ensure that it is not a primary fuel. Whenever an alcohol/water mix is injected into the engine it shall be considered a fuel and the tank must follow the same rules as other fuels.

(Note: when hybrid or battery-only cars start showing up we need to consider the safety implications of 500 volt batteries. When hydrogen or LNG powered cars start showing up we will need to change this rule.)
